Schumer defers to Pelosi on impeachment

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday dodged questions on whether he would support the House beginning a formal inquiry to impeach President Donald Trump.

"I believe that ... Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi is handling this appropriately," Schumer told reporters.

Schumer's deference to Pelosi comes days after Patty Murray of Washington, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, said she supports the House beginning impeachment proceedings. She was joined Monday by Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, the No. 4 Democrat in the Senate.

So far, 12 of the 47 Democrats in the Senate support formal impeachment proceedings. Of those, five are running for president Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Cory Booker of New Jersey. Warren and Klobuchar are all in Democratic leadership. Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who caucuses with the Democratic Party and is seeking its presidential nomination, also supports the effort.

In the House, more than 100 Democrats support impeachment proceedings — almost half of the 235-member caucus.
